History
Alfred Hollis was born on 1 November 1856, to John Edward Hollis, a shipwright, and Ann White. He was the fourth of five children. Alfred was baptised as a Wesleyan Methodist on 25 January 1857 in the parish of Portsea, in St Peter's Chapel on Daniel Street.
In the 1861 and 1871 censuses, Alfred Hollis was listed as living at 14 King Street in Portsea with his parents and his siblings. He resided at the same address in the 1881 census, though his siblings Julia and Edward no longer lived there. In 1881, his occupation was listed as 'Ironmonger'.
1881 was a year of two weddings: on 16 April, Alfred was a witness to the marriage of his sister, Jessie Hollis, to John Edwin Jenkins, at the Church of St. John, Portsea. On 24 December, he and Rose Harris were married in St. Peter's Chapel, Portsea, by Reverend J. H. Loxley.
His first son, Alfred John Hollis, was born on 8 December 1882. His only daughter, Helena Rose Hollis, was born on 24 May 1885. In the 1891 census, the family were living at 108 Kings Street in Portsmouth. Alfred's occupation was listed as 'Ironmonger's Clerk'. His second son, Harold Frederick Hollis, was born on 13 July 1893.
[In between stuff]
On Harold Frederick Hollis' marriage register in 1918, Alfred's occupation was listed as 'Accountant'.
