History
Harold Frederick Hollis was born on 13 July 1893 to Alfred Hollis, an accountant and auditor, and Rose Harris. He was the youngest of three children, his older siblings being Alfred John and Helena Rose Hollis. He was baptised as a Wesleyan Methodist on 20 August 1893 in St Peter's Chapel, Daniel Street, Portsmouth. At this point in time, the family lived at 108 Kings Street, Southsea. By the time of the 1901 census, however, they were living at 72 St Andrews Road, Portsmouth.
In the 1911 census, he and his mother, Rose, are listed as boarders at a boarding-house run by Annie Marther Thatcher, at 11 Alexandra Villas, Brighton. He was 17, and employed as a bank clerk.
