History
Julia Hollis was born on 30 October 1851 in Portsea, to John Edward Hollis, a shipwright, and Ann White. She was the second of five children. Julia was baptised as a Wesleyan Methodist on 25 January 1852 in the parish of Portsea, in St Peter's Chapel on Daniel Street.
In the 1861 and 1871 censuses, Julia was listed as living at 14 King Street in Portsea with her parents and her siblings. In 1871, aged 19, her occupation was listed as 'dressmaker'.
On 6 July 1874, Julia was married to John Henry Casling, a cordwainer, at St James' Church, Milton. She was 22, he was 24. The marriage was an Anglican marriage, witnessed by Sarah Ann Hollis and John Edward Hollis.
Julia died on 11 April 1875, aged 23, at 14 King Street, Portsea. The death was formally witnessed by her husband, also resident there. The death certificate records her cause of death as phthisis, an archaic term for tuberculosis or similar diseases; she had been suffering from it for 7 months. She was buried at Kingston Cemetery on 16 April 1875.
